Crookes sits about two miles northwest of Sheffield city centre, built along the ridge that separates inner suburbs from the hills to the west. Its main spine is Crookes Road, a compact parade of shops, cafes, takeaways and pubs that serves local residents and students from nearby Crookesmoor. There are primary schools, a community centre and local health services within walking distance, and regular bus routes connect Crookes to the city and to neighbouring Broomhill and Walkley. The area began as a village outside Sheffield and retains a small-centre feel around the main road.
