The area is connected by the A467 road, which follows the river corridors, and includes the distinct communities of Crosskeys and Ynysddu, separated by a few miles of this valley terrain.

A notable local landmark is the large, now inactive, Maes-y-cwmmer colliery spoil tip, which dominates the view north of Crosskeys. The area's history is closely linked to coal mining, with many community features originating from that era. The Sirhowy Valley Walk, a recreational path on a former railway line, passes through Ynysddu, following the river.
