About

Darfield ward lies in the northeastern part of the Barnsley borough. The area is centred around the village of Darfield itself, with the River Dearne flowing to the south. It includes the communities of Low Valley and Broomhill, situated on the land between the Dearne and its tributary, the Dove. The landscape is characterised by former mining land that has been largely reclaimed, with open fields and woodland patches. The ward is primarily residential, with local services concentrated in the village centre.

The area's history is deeply connected to coal mining, with the site of the former Darfield Main Colliery now repurposed. A notable local landmark is the 12th-century All Saints' Church, which stands on a raised earthwork overlooking the village. Transport links include the A635 road running through the ward, connecting to neighbouring areas. Much of the surrounding land is given over to agriculture, with several farms operating on the ward's outskirts.
