Darton and Kexborough lie northwest of Barnsley town centre in the Metropolitan Borough of Barnsley. Darton railway station provides regular services to Barnsley and Wakefield, and the two settlements form a compact cluster along local lanes. The area contains primary schools, small shops, a village hall and a handful of pubs, with playing fields and sports clubs used by residents.
