Darton & Kexborough

Darton and Kexborough lie northwest of Barnsley town centre in the Metropolitan Borough of Barnsley. Darton railway station provides regular services to Barnsley and Wakefield, and the two settlements form a compact cluster along local lanes. The area contains primary schools, small shops, a village hall and a handful of pubs, with playing fields and sports clubs used by residents. Housing ranges from stone terraces to semi-detached estates and a number of narrow streets reflect the villages’ growth during the 19th and early 20th centuries.

The landscape still shows traces of coal-mining: former pit sites, miners’ cottages and reclaimed colliery land now used for allotments, walking routes and pocket woodland. The River Dearne runs close to the settlements and feeds local drainage and green corridors. Community life is centred on clubs, seasonal events and grassroots sport, while the rail link and local roads give residents straightforward access to Barnsley for larger services and to neighbouring towns for work and shopping.
