Dowlais

Dowlais is located at the northern edge of Merthyr Tydfil, situated on the steep hillsides overlooking the Taf Fawr valley. The area is historically defined by the Dowlais Ironworks, once the largest in the world, whose remnants and industrial archaeology shape the landscape. The terraced rows of houses, built for the workforce, climb the slopes in distinct tiers. This layout offers extensive views across the valley towards the Brecon Beacons National Park.

The community is centred along the main road, which contains essential local services and shops. A notable landmark is the former Dowlais Stables, a grand Victorian building that once housed the ironworks' horses, reflecting the scale of the past industry. Open spaces like the Sirhowy Valley Walk provide access to greenery along the river. The area maintains a strong sense of its own identity, separate from the town centre further down the valley.
