Downlands & Forest North

Downlands & Forest North encompasses a large rural ward on the northern edge of the New Forest National Park. The landscape is characterised by open heathland, scattered woodland, and agricultural fields. Settlements are small and dispersed, including villages like Godshill and North Gorley, which are connected by narrow country lanes. The area has a quiet, residential character with a focus on local community life and forest management.

A notable feature is the presence of the Ober Water stream, which flows through the heathland. The ward contains significant areas of common land where ponies and cattle roam freely, as per the ancient New Forest practices. This is working forest land, with forestry operations and grazing rights shaping the environment. The terrain is generally flat, making it suitable for walking and cycling along the numerous permitted tracks and bridleways.
