About

Dunnington, Elvington and Wheldrake lie to the east and southeast of York, inside the City of York unitary area. The three villages sit among arable fields and meadowland, with lanes, footpaths and bridleways linking farms and settlements. Dunnington retains a compact village centre with local shops, a primary school and community facilities. Elvington occupies the site of a former RAF station; its airfield now hosts the Yorkshire Air Museum, where a collection of military and civil aircraft is kept on the tarmac and in hangars.

Wheldrake sits alongside the River Derwent and the floodplain known as Wheldrake Ings, a patchwork of wet grassland and grazing islands that fills with winter water and draws birds in seasonal numbers. Together the three communities share parish councils, village halls and amateur sports clubs, and residents use York for most larger services and rail links. The area is used by walkers and cyclists who move between lanes, river paths and the museum site at the old airfield.
