Elsecar

Elsecar sits in the metropolitan borough of Barnsley, built around 19th-century coal and ironworks. The village centre is anchored by the former colliery workshops, now the Elsecar Heritage Centre, where original buildings house shops, galleries and a visitor route through industrial stores. A preserved Newcomen atmospheric engine remains on site, close to the canal basin that once linked pits to wider waterways. Small terraces and former pit cottages form a clear street pattern around the heritage core, reflecting the village’s origins as a planned mining settlement.
