Fishergate ward lies on the southern bank of the River Ouse, directly across from York's historic city centre. The area is primarily residential, with a mix of Victorian terraces and modern developments. It contains the Terry's chocolate factory site, now repurposed for housing and business. The main thoroughfare is Bishopthorpe Road, known locally as 'Bishy Road', which functions as a community hub with independent shops and cafes.

The ward includes the residential areas of South Bank and part of Fulford.
