Gateshead South

Gateshead South covers the southern portion of the borough, including neighbourhoods such as Saltwell, Bensham, Deckham, Low Fell and Dunston. The area combines housing estates, terraced streets and strips of public green space. Saltwell Park sits at the heart of the district with a boating lake, walled garden and Saltwell Towers, a 19th-century house in the park. Local schools, shops and community centres are interspersed through the neighbourhoods, and allotments and pocket parks provide everyday outdoor space for residents.

Industry and logistics have a long history here, concentrated around the Team Valley and Dunston corridors where trading estates and warehouses sit beside older riverside infrastructure. The timber Dunston Staiths, the large coal-loading structure on the south bank of the Tyne, marks the riverside edge of the area and is a listed industrial relic. Bus routes and local roads link Gateshead South to the rest of the borough, while community organisations run events and services from village halls and leisure centres.
