Greenstead ward lies on the eastern edge of Colchester, bordered by the University of Essex campus to the south and the A133 to the north. The area is primarily residential, characterised by a mix of post-war housing estates and more modern developments. The area contains the large Greenstead Estate, one of the first major developments in this part of the town.
