About

Grimethorpe and Brierley sit in the Dearne Valley within the Barnsley borough, places shaped by coal mining and the rail links that served the pits. Grimethorpe grew around its colliery and a brass band that continued through the pit closures; the Grimethorpe Colliery Band is widely known and was featured in the film Brassed Off. The colliery itself closed in 1992, after which former pit sites were reclaimed and some have been converted to open space and walking routes. Local streets still show rows of miners’ housing and community buildings that mark the industrial past.

Brierley lies a short distance from Grimethorpe and shares the valley’s industrial history, with a village centre around a parish church and shops. Over time small-scale redevelopment, community projects and landscaping of former industrial land have altered the pattern of streets and green space. Local groups run events and maintain civic facilities, and there are accessible lanes and footpaths that connect the village to neighbouring settlements within the Barnsley district.
