Isles of Scilly

About

The Isles of Scilly is an archipelago located 45 kilometres off the southwestern tip of Cornwall. It consists of around 140 islands, though only five are inhabited: St Mary’s, Tresco, St Martin’s, Bryher, and St Agnes. The district covers a total area of just 16 square kilometres, making it one of the smallest local government areas in the UK. The islands are known for their mild climate, influenced by the Gulf Stream, which supports unique flora and fauna.

The economy of the Isles of Scilly relies heavily on tourism, with visitors drawn to its beaches, wildlife, and historic sites. Agriculture, particularly flower farming, also plays a role. The islands have a small, close-knit community, with a population of around 2,200. Transport links include ferries and flights from the mainland, with limited infrastructure due to the remote location. The landscape is characterised by rocky outcrops, sandy coves, and low-lying heathland.
