About

The Isles of Scilly are an archipelago of over 140 islands and reefs, of which five—St Mary's, Tresco, St Martin's, St Agnes, and Bryher—are regularly inhabited. The islands sit on a granite outcrop with many low-lying sandy islets, tidal channels and intertidal reef, producing sheltered bays and white sand beaches. St Mary's is the largest island and contains Hugh Town and the island airport that links the group; some smaller islands are reachable by short boat trips and, at low tide, Gugh is joined to St Agnes by a sandbar.

Land cover is a mix of maritime grassland, heath and cultivated plots; early-season flower growing has long been part of the local economy. Tresco's Abbey Garden contains plant species that thrive behind stone walls, reflecting the archipelago's mild, ocean-moderated climate. Wildlife includes seabird colonies on offshore rocks and common seals hauled out on reefs. Settlements are small, with services concentrated on St Mary's and quieter populations on the other inhabited islands, where transport, weather and tides shape daily life.
