About

Kirkstall sits on the north bank of the River Aire in west Leeds, about three miles northwest of the city centre. The area is centred on the ruins of Kirkstall Abbey, a Cistercian house founded in the 12th century; the abbey's nave and west range remain beside riverside lawns and public footpaths that form part of Kirkstall Valley Park. The abbey sits close to the river and its standing masonry and layout record phases of use and repair that are visible to visitors, and the surrounding parkland is used for community events.

To the west the Kirkstall Forge site records ironworking activity back to the medieval period and has been redeveloped with homes, office space and a railway station serving commuters. Kirkstall Road (A65) runs through the area and provides bus and road links to the city centre; local shops, cafes and community groups make use of the riverbank and parkland for markets and outdoor activity. Cycle routes and footbridges connect residential streets with the abbey and riverside paths, and schools and sports pitches sit within short walks of the main shopping streets.
