Knottingley sits on the north bank of the River Aire in the Wakefield district of West Yorkshire. The Aire and Calder Navigation runs through the town, where a canal basin and a sequence of locks once handled coal and glass traffic and shaped local industry. Glassmaking, boatbuilding and coal were long-standing trades; former glassworks and riverside wharves remain part of the townscape and mark the route of the navigation through Knottingley. The town developed around those working yards and the river crossing at the bridge that links the main streets.

Today Knottingley functions as a local centre for shops, services and community organisations, with a mix of commercial terraces and industrial plots alongside the waterfront. Towpaths follow the navigation and provide direct walking routes between riverside sites and the town centre.
