Llanfoist Fawr and Govilon

Llanfoist Fawr and Govilon ward encompasses the eastern edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park, where the Usk Valley narrows. The area is defined by the River Usk and the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal, which run parallel through the landscape. Settlement is concentrated in the villages of Llanfoist and Govilon, with residential areas extending onto the surrounding hillsides. The geography includes wooded slopes and open farmland, with the Blorenge mountain forming a prominent backdrop to the south.

The ward's history is closely linked to industrial transport, with the canal and later the railway serving the ironworks of neighbouring Blaenavon. This heritage is visible in structures like the canal wharf at Govilon. The area functions primarily as a residential community for Abergavenny, with local services centred along the main road. A notable feature is the tunnel entrance for the long-disused horse-drawn tramroad that once climbed directly to the Blaenavon ironworks from the canal basin.
