About

Looe sits on the south-east Cornish coast where the River Looe divides the town into East and West Looe, joined by a bridge across the estuary. The working harbour fronts shops, fish merchants and a small fleet that still lands crab and lobster on the quays. Offshore, Looe Island (sometimes called St George’s Island) marks the bay and is a familiar sight from the promenades. Narrow streets climb from the waterfront and the rail line into the town provides a direct link to the surrounding countryside and coastal paths.

Polperro lies a few miles west along the same stretch of coast, built around a compact, deep-set harbour squeezed between steep banks. Boats sit close to stone quays and wooden cellars carved into the slope recall the village’s long association with fishing and coastal trade. A maze of lanes and footpaths threads past cottages, small galleries and a heritage museum that documents local life. The South West Coast Path runs through both settlements, offering a continuous coastal route for walkers between coves, headlands and the villages themselves.
