Luton

Luton is a residential suburb situated in the northwest of the Medway unitary authority, bordering the River Medway. The area is primarily characterised by post-war housing estates, with a mix of detached and semi-detached homes. Its layout includes several local parks and green spaces, such as Luton Recreation Ground, which provide recreational areas for the community. The suburb functions largely as a commuter base, with road links to central Chatham and the wider Medway Towns.

The area's geography is defined by its position on a slope leading down to the river, offering views across the water towards Upnor and the former gunpowder magazines. A notable local feature is the presence of the historic Luton Arches, a series of brick railway viaducts carrying the Chatham Main Line. These substantial Victorian structures, built for the South Eastern Railway, cut through the heart of the neighbourhood and are a dominant part of the local landscape, representing the area's historical connection to this major transport route.
