About

Marchwood is a village situated on the western shore of Southampton Water, directly opposite the city. Its shoreline includes industrial areas and the large Marchwood Military Port, which handles freight and supports naval operations. The village itself has residential streets and local amenities, with some housing dating to the 1960s expansion. The area is bordered by the New Forest heathland to the west, providing a contrast between developed waterfront and protected open space.

Adjacent to Marchwood, Dibden Purlieu is a larger residential settlement on the forest's edge. It developed significantly in the latter half of the 20th century. The nearby Dibden Bay, between Hythe and Marchwood, was the focus of a major port expansion debate that was ultimately rejected. The area is characterised by its position where suburban housing meets the open landscapes of the New Forest National Park, with walking access onto the heath.
