About

Mersea and Pyefleet ward encompasses the large island of Mersea and its surrounding tidal creeks in the Colne Estuary. The area is dominated by water, marshland, and agricultural fields. The main settlement is West Mersea, a working community with a harbour and boatyards. The Strood causeway connects the island to the mainland, flooding at high spring tides and temporarily cutting off access.

The Pyefleet Channel separates Mersea from the mainland marshes of the Langenhoe Ranges, creating a distinct, low-lying landscape. The area is known for its oyster fisheries, with cultivation beds visible at low tide. Much of the coastline is protected for its wildlife, comprising saltmarsh, mudflats, and grazing marshes. The remote eastern end of the island remains largely undeveloped.
