About

Merthyr Vale is located along the River Taff in the southern part of the county borough. The ward's landscape is defined by the steep valley sides of the Taff Valley, with residential areas situated on the lower slopes. Historically, its development was closely tied to the now-closed Merthyr Vale Colliery. The community is largely linear, following the course of the river and the main A4054 road, which serves as a central thoroughfare connecting it to other settlements.

A prominent feature is the large, grassed-over spoil tip from the former colliery, which now forms a significant green hill within the village. The area includes the site of the former Merthyr Vale railway station. Housing consists primarily of terraced homes and post-war estates. The ward contains local shops and services catering to daily needs, with larger retail and employment centres found further north in Merthyr Tydfil town.
