About

Milford & Lymington South sits where the New Forest meets the Solent, a coastal strip that runs from Milford-on-Sea along Hurst Spit to the estuary mouth at Lymington. The shoreline here is a mix of pebble beach, shingle spit and salt marsh, with Hurst Spit forming a long shingle bank that shelters a Tudor artillery fort at its tip, built in the reign of Henry VIII. Mudflats and reed beds at the river mouth are feeding grounds for waders and wildfowl, and paths along the coast link cliff-top walks with the ferry steps at Lymington quay.

Lymington itself is a working port focused on small craft: boatyards, marinas and sailing clubs line the river, and a regular passenger ferry crosses to Yarmouth on the Isle of Wight. The town centre retains narrow streets and a cobbled quay where a Saturday market trades alongside fishing and marine services. To the north the open heaths of the New Forest begin, where ponies and cattle often graze close to lanes, giving the area a strong connection between maritime activity and pastoral commons.
