The settlement is positioned close to the River Torne and the larger River Don, with its landscape characterised by flat, low-lying land historically associated with farming and drainage.

The area includes the Moorends Recreation Ground and is near the Thorne & Hatfield Moors, one of the largest lowland raised peat bogs in the UK. Its street pattern is primarily a grid layout, with housing consisting largely of interwar and post-war terraced and semi-detached homes.
