About

Mytholmroyd sits in the Calder Valley with the River Calder running through the village. Stone-built terraces and former textile mills line the valley floor beside the river. The village has a station on the Calder Valley line and a compact centre with shops, a library and community spaces. Poet Ted Hughes was born in Mytholmroyd in 1930, and local footpaths rise from the village into fields and moorland above the valley. The layout follows the river and its tributary channels, with narrow lanes climbing the valley sides.

Cragg Vale stretches up from the valley into high moorland and farmland, linked by a single main road that runs unbroken for about 5.5 miles and is a regular route for cyclists and walkers. Farms, drystone walls and short lanes sit along the slope above the valley; small streams drain into the Calder below. Public rights of way cross the moor and connect farm tracks with valley paths, offering direct access from the settlements to upland terrain.
