About

Nant-y-moel, Ogmore Vale and Blackmill sit along the Ogmore Valley in Bridgend county borough. The three villages follow the course of the Afon Ogwr, with narrow streets, former mining terraces and roofs that mark a 19th–20th century industrial pattern. Nant-y-moel’s name comes from Welsh—“nant” for stream and “moel” for bare hill—reflecting the small watercourses and open slopes at the valley head. Local lanes link the settlements to the river and to a network of footpaths that climb onto the uplands above the valley floor.

Coal extraction shaped housing, street layouts and several community buildings; collieries and associated works closed during the late 20th century, leaving relics and reclaimed ground. Blackmill retains a compact village centre and community hall used for local events. The area is crossed by public rights of way, woodland pockets and former industrial earthworks that now form part of everyday routes for residents and walkers, showing the transition from working valley to mixed residential and recreational landscape.
