Newby & Scalby is a civil parish formed from the merging of two villages, situated where the North Yorkshire coast meets the North York Moors National Park. The area is bordered by Scalby Beck to the north and Peasholm Glen to the south, with residential streets climbing the wooded slopes inland from the sea.

The coastline here is defined by Scalby Ness, a rocky headland with a lighthouse, and the rugged scar of Scalby Mills. A notable local feature is the preserved watercourse of the Old Scalby Mills, which once powered a mill and now runs parallel to the beach road.
