About

Padiham sits on the banks of the River Calder in the borough of Burnley, north-west Lancashire. The town grew along the valley where the river and local roads meet; cotton mills and collieries shaped its layout and many former mill buildings remain along the waterfront. The main road through Padiham runs toward Burnley and connects local housing, shops and light industry. The river still marks the town centre, with bridges and old mill channels visible where water once powered weaving and spinning machinery.

Community life is centred on civic buildings, the Memorial Park and local sports clubs, including Padiham Football Club, which play close to the town. There are regular community events and efforts to reuse mill sites for new purposes. From the streets of Padiham footpaths lead up from the valley to the lower Pennine slopes, providing direct access to upland fields and lanes. On clear days the line of mill chimneys and warehouse rows along the Calder give a sense of how industry shaped the town’s form.
