About

Padstow sits at the mouth of the River Camel on Cornwall’s north coast and functions as a working fishing port and small harbour. Boats line the quay and, at low tide, the channel exposes sand and clay where vessels settle until the tide returns. A seasonal foot ferry crosses the estuary to Rock, and the Camel Trail cycle and walking route follows the estuary inland from the town. Narrow streets around the harbour hold shops, boatyards and seafood restaurants that draw on the local catch.

The parish of St Issey lies just inland from Padstow and is largely agricultural, made up of fields, lanes and scattered hamlets. Little Petherick Creek runs into the Camel estuary from this parish, narrowing to shallow channels and saltmarsh before the tide comes in. A village church marks the centre of community activity, and lanes lead to farmsteads and coastal viewpoints. The area’s pattern of hedgerows, small woodlands and creeks reflects a long history of mixed farming and estuary use.
