About

Par sits on Cornwall's south coast at the mouth of the River Par, where a compact harbour opens onto St Austell Bay. The harbour expanded in the early 19th century after Joseph Treffry built a quay and tramways to move copper and china clay from inland workings to ships; traces of the tramway and parts of the original dock layout remain around the water. The Cornish Main Line runs through the village and Par station lies close to the docks, linking the settlement with other coastal towns and the wider rail network.

The shoreline here includes Par Sands, a broad stretch of sand backed by low dunes and tidal flats at low water. Industry and housing are interwoven: former clay works and dock buildings sit near rows of terraces and newer housing. A local golf course occupies land just inland from the beach, and public footpaths follow the river and shore, providing direct access from the village to the estuary and harbour areas. The mix of railway, harbour and clay-industry remains shapes how the village sits on the coast.
