Pentre-bach & Mountain Hare

Pentre-bach sits on the northeastern edge of Merthyr Tydfil, a residential area with rows of terraced houses built on the valley slopes. The streets follow the contours of the land, offering views across the town centre below. It is a quiet neighbourhood, primarily housing, with local shops and a community pub serving the immediate area. The architecture reflects the town's historical development, with some older properties alongside more modern infill.

Directly above, the open moorland of the Mountain Hare area begins, marked by the large communications mast visible for miles. This is part of the expansive Merthyr Common, a high plateau of rough grassland and heather. A specific network of old quarry tracks and footpaths crisscrosses the terrain, leading walkers to isolated reservoirs like Pentwyn. The landscape is exposed and often windswept, a stark contrast to the sheltered valley, and is known for its populations of upland birds.
