About

Rotherham metropolitan borough sits in South Yorkshire within the Yorkshire and The Humber region, with the town of Rotherham on the River Don. The borough takes its name from the River Rother and includes places such as Rawmarsh, Maltby, Wath upon Dearne, Swinton and Dinnington. Coal mining and steelmaking shaped much of the built environment; the former Templeborough steelworks now houses the Magna Science Adventure Centre inside its red-brick shell, and the New York Stadium occupies the site of a former foundry. River corridors and canal links run through the district and have influenced road and rail routes into the town.

Large estate lands and reclaimed colliery sites sit alongside industrial areas. Wentworth Woodhouse lies within the borough, its long classical façade facing parkland, and Rother Valley Country Park provides lakes and trails created from former mining land. Local regeneration projects focus on remediating brownfield sites and strengthening manufacturing, logistics and service sectors while retaining river-side routes and green corridors that have long defined settlement patterns.
