About

Saltash sits on the west bank of the River Tamar in east Cornwall, where the town centre and waterfront meet the bridge crossings to Devon. The Royal Albert Bridge, designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel and opened in 1859, carries the railway across the Tamar with its paired iron arches and stone piers visible from the quay. Saltash railway station stands at the Cornwall end of the bridge. Fore Street runs uphill from the waterside and contains local shops, pubs and services that serve residents and visitors. The river edge and slipways reflect the town’s maritime past and provide walking routes along the estuary.

Pillmere lies immediately north of Saltash town centre and is mainly residential, with a small parade of shops, a primary school and public open spaces. Footpaths from Pillmere link to the station and the riverside, giving direct access to the waterfront and bridge views. Local green spaces and playing fields are used for community sport and informal leisure, while road links connect the area with the A38 and wider parts of Cornwall.
