About

Saltburn-by-the-Sea sits on the North Sea coast in the borough of Redcar and Cleveland, North Yorkshire. The town grew with the arrival of the railway in the 19th century and retains a grid of Victorian streets leading down to a long sandy beach and cliffs. A pier built in 1869 projects into the sea and the shoreline is used by swimmers and surfers. A water-balanced cliff lift connects the town centre with the lower promenade, operating from rails cut into the cliff face and carrying passengers between the top road and the seafront.

Behind the promenade, Saltburn Valley Gardens runs through a wooded glen with footpaths, a stream and seasonal planting. The town centre has independent shops, cafes and galleries along its main streets and the former railway influence is visible in the station and track alignments. Local events, beach access points and the coastal path provide routes for walking and running along the headland and down to the pier.
