Sandygate & Crosspool

Crosspool sits on the western side of Sheffield, roughly three miles from the city centre. The area is built around a series of residential streets that slope away from the main road, with local shops, a post office and a parade of small businesses serving day-to-day needs. School buildings, community halls and sports pitches are interspersed with housing, and bus services link Crosspool to the city and neighbouring suburbs. The road pattern and property types reflect growth in the early and mid 20th century, and gardens and street trees are a common feature of the neighbourhood.

Sandygate forms part of the local high street and is best known for the football ground on Sandygate Road, home to Hallam Football Club; the ground dates from 1860 and is recognised as the oldest football ground still in use. From the streets of Crosspool short lanes and public footpaths climb out to open moorland and the Redmires area, used by walkers and cyclists, while local sports clubs, pubs and small green spaces provide meeting points for residents.
