Seaton sits at the western end of Lyme Bay, where the River Axe meets the English Channel. The town's long pebble beach and esplanade look out across the bay towards Beer Head. Behind the seafront, the layout is largely linear, following the main road through the Axe Valley.

The area is defined by its position within the Jurassic Coast, with cliffs of Cretaceous greensand and chalk. The Seaton Tramway operates along the river valley, travelling inland through the Axe wetlands to Colyton. This low-lying estuary habitat is a noted location for birdlife.
