About

East Devon is a local government district in Devon on England's south-west coast. It covers coastline from Exmouth and Orcombe Point along the Jurassic Coast eastward to the Dorset boundary near Seaton, plus inland ground reaching the Blackdown Hills. Rivers such as the Exe, Otter and Axe form estuaries and wetlands that shape farmland and settlements; the South West Coast Path follows much of the shoreline. The East Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and the Pebblebed Heaths lie within the district and support coastal and heathland habitats.

Main towns include Exmouth, Sidmouth, Budleigh Salterton, Seaton, Honiton and Axminster; the local economy mixes agriculture, fishing, small manufacturing and visitor services. Honiton remains associated with bobbin lace. Beer Quarry Caves supplied Beer stone used in regional churches and historic buildings. Ottery St Mary marks Guy Fawkes night by rolling and carrying lit tar barrels through the streets. Seasonal tourism focuses on beaches, fossil hunting along the Jurassic Coast and walking coastal and inland trails.
