About

Severn ward covers the eastern edge of Monmouthshire, bordering the Forest of Dean across the wide River Severn. The area is characterised by the flat, low-lying landscape of the Caldicot Levels, a reclaimed wetland area of fields and drainage ditches. Settlements here, including the villages of Rogiet and Undy, are small and linear, often following the historic routes across the levels. The M4 motorway runs through the ward, connecting it directly to the Severn Bridge crossings into England.

The physical and economic life of the ward is dominated by its position along the Severn estuary. Large industrial sites, including the major steelworks at Llanwern, are key local employers. The flat terrain is primarily used for agriculture, with the network of reens (drainage channels) defining the field patterns. The Severn itself provides a constant backdrop, with vast mudflats exposed at low tide and the landmark Second Severn Crossing forming a permanent fixture on the eastern horizon.
