Shafton & Upper Cudworth

Shafton and Upper Cudworth sit to the east of Barnsley town within the borough of Barnsley in South Yorkshire. The area developed around 19th- and 20th-century coal workings; remnants of that past survive in converted buildings and street patterns. Shafton Two Gates, a name carried into local road signs, records the turnpike toll gates that once stood on the main route through the parish. Upper Cudworth occupies higher ground above the original village core and retains a pattern of terraces alongside later housing estates laid out after the pits closed.

Day-to-day life centres on local shops, schools and sports pitches, with playing fields and allotments giving stretches of open ground between built-up streets. Footpaths and farm tracks link the settlements to surrounding farmland and to community greens. Regular bus services run to Barnsley town centre and beyond, and local roads provide access toward the M1 corridor. The area is used by people who work locally and by commuters, and long-standing community groups and clubs remain active in village halls and social venues.
