About

Sherborne lies in north-west Dorset on the River Yeo. It is a market town with origins in medieval times; Sherborne Abbey dominates the centre with origins in the 12th century. Many buildings are built of honey-coloured hamstone from Ham Hill, giving streets a consistent appearance. The river runs through Abbey Gardens and alongside school playing fields; small lanes link the market square to residential terraces and almshouses. Independent shops, cafes and a farmers' market provide the town's retail focus.

Within easy walking distance are two castle sites: the ruins of the 12th-century Old Castle on a wooded hill and Sherborne Castle, a 16th-century house set in Capability Brown-designed parkland, with formal gardens often open to the public. The town is home to two historic schools with substantial stone buildings and a programme of concerts and festivals centred on the abbey and civic spaces. The combination of riverside green space, stone architecture and closely sited castle remains defines Sherborne's character.
