Shotton is a former mining village located near Peterlee in east County Durham. The area is characterised by rows of terraced housing and local amenities centred around a few main roads. To the south, the landscape opens into agricultural land bordering the Durham Coast.

Haswell is a separate village situated a few miles inland, also with a strong historical connection to coal mining. The area is marked by the Haswell Plough, a local landmark pub, and the nearby Haswell to Hart walkway, a path following the route of a former railway line. This path now provides a green corridor through the surrounding farmland.
