About

The Stray is a 200-acre area of open parkland encircling the historic spa town of Harrogate. It consists of wide, grassy verges and tree-lined paths that follow the main roads into the town centre. This green belt was originally common land, legally protected by an Act of Parliament in 1778 to preserve public access. The land is managed for recreation and grazing, maintaining its open character against urban development.

A specific law requires that at least 215 acres of The Stray must remain unfenced and unenclosed in perpetuity. Each summer, parts of the grassland are left uncut to encourage wildflowers and biodiversity. The open space hosts major events, including the Great Yorkshire Show, temporarily transforming sections into exhibition grounds. Its circular route provides a consistent green entrance to the town from all directions.
