Swallownest & Wales

Swallownest sits on the eastern edge of Rotherham, bordering open countryside near the M1 motorway. The residential area is primarily made up of post-war housing estates, with local shops and services clustered along Sheffield Road. To the west lies the former Waleswood colliery site, now reclaimed as part of the wider Rother Valley Country Park. The area is defined by this transition from a historic mining landscape to green recreational space.

The adjacent village of Wales, often linked as Wales Bar, is a smaller settlement with older stone-built houses. A notable local feature is the Wales Church of England Primary School, housed in a distinctive Victorian building with a prominent bell tower. The area's geography is gently sloping, with fields and wooded areas separating it from the more urban centres of Kiveton Park to the east and Aston to the north.
