About

The Lizard Peninsula in Cornwall occupies the southern tip of mainland Britain, ending at Lizard Point. Bedrock here is dominated by serpentinite and associated rocks known as the Lizard complex; outcrops of green and white serpentine appear along cliffs and at places such as Kynance Cove. Heathland and coastal grass support plants that are scarce elsewhere in the UK, including Cornish heath (Erica vagans), and the shore hosts seaweeds that change with the tides. Navigation is a constant theme: Lizard Point lighthouse marks hazardous shoals and the coastal record includes many wrecks.

Villages on the peninsula are small and focused on fishing; the village of The Lizard sits close to the point, while Coverack, Cadgwith and Mullion occupy other stretches of coast. On Goonhilly Downs large radio dishes of the Earth Station stand among heathland on the interior plateau. Footpaths follow cliff tops and hedged lanes lead to hamlets, linking fishing, farming and visitors. Local services focus on sustaining communities rather than large-scale development.
