Treharris & Trelewis

Treharris and Trelewis are neighbouring settlements in the Taff Bargoed Valley. The area is defined by its industrial past, with the Trelewis Drift coal mine once a central employer. The landscape is marked by the large, grassed-over spoil tip known locally as the 'Trecatti tip', a prominent green hill that now offers walking routes and views across the valley. The communities are connected by local roads and residential streets that follow the contours of the hillsides.

The area is home to Taff Bargoed Park, a large country park created on reclaimed colliery land, featuring a lake and extensive paths. The former railway line through the valley is now part of the Taff Trail, a long-distance route for cyclists and walkers. Daily life centres around local amenities like Treharris Square, with its war memorial and public houses. The distinctive silhouette of the old winding wheel from the Trelewis Drift mine remains preserved on the hillside as a local landmark.
