Westoe

Westoe is a district in the western part of South Shields, within the Metropolitan Borough of South Tyneside. Its core is Westoe Village, a compact area of older houses and narrow lanes that predates much of the surrounding suburban development. The village and adjacent streets include rows of 18th- and 19th-century buildings set alongside later terraces and semi-detached housing. Local services cluster along Westoe Road and nearby streets, with primary schools, small shops and community facilities serving residents. Public transport links run into South Shields town centre and the wider Tyne and Wear network.

Green space and small neighbourhood parks sit between the housing pockets, and slopes in the area offer views toward the lower reaches of the Tyne estuary without crossing into other districts. The village core is protected as a conservation area, so the street pattern and surviving older buildings remain evident amid newer housing. Long-established clubs and organisations meet in community halls, and everyday life in Westoe is shaped around its village street, the road network and nearby town-centre services.
