The ward includes the historic village of Tongwynlais and the larger suburb of Whitchurch, which features local high streets with independent shops and services. The area is bordered by the River Taff to the west and contains several large parks and recreational grounds within its boundaries.

A dominant feature is Castell Coch, the 19th-century Gothic revival castle set within the ancient woods of Fforest Fawr.
