About

Aber Valley lies in the northern part of Caerphilly County Borough in South Wales, formed by the steep-sided valley around the villages of Abertridwr and Senghenydd. The A467 runs along the valley floor and links the settlements to nearby towns. Hill slopes carry pockets of woodland and grazing, and public footpaths climb from the villages up to ridgelines used by local walkers. Housing and community facilities cluster along the main road, while small local shops and a few pubs serve daily needs.

The area’s industrial past is visible in street names and in a stone memorial in Senghenydd recording the 1913 colliery disaster that claimed 439 lives, the deadliest mining accident in British history. Rows of former miners’ terraces and the layout of pit-related streets reflect the valley’s development around coal. Community projects now maintain green spaces and sports facilities, and local groups run events that mark mining anniversaries and village traditions, keeping local memory and practical services focused within the valley itself.
