Barry Island occupies a peninsula extending into the Bristol Channel. The area is dominated by the large, functional port to its west, with industrial silos and docks. To the east lies the resort, centred on Whitmore Bay’s sandy beach and a promenade lined with traditional amusements and food stalls.

The landscape includes headlands with grassy slopes offering views across the water. The promenade leads to the remains of a small fort on Friars Point. A causeway and road bridge connect the island to the mainland town of Barry.
